When is it preferable to book a travel health consult and do I need to do anything prior to the consult?
To enable adequate time for vaccines to be effective, it is preferable to book travel consults 6-8 weeks prior to travel. Group or family appointments are a great way of ensuring everyone within the travel group takes adequate precautions to stay healthy while away. Please inform reception staff about the purpose and the number of patients attending the appointment when making a booking.
So that your GP can place your travel itinerary in the context of each patient’s unique health story, please download and complete a Pre-Travel Medical Questionnaire HERE prior to the appointment.
Please phone the practice to book all travel appointments
What does a travel health consult involve?
At GPs on Bayview our travel recommendations will be distinctively tailored around your travel plans and background health and your own immunisation history. Our travel consults empower patients with written and web-based resources so that you can be involved in the decision making prior to travel, then have useful resources at hand if your health takes an unexpected turn while away. GPs on Bayview stocks a comprehensive range of travel vaccines on site and are an approved Yellow Fever vaccine provider.
We can provide patients with travel kits, to initiate treatment for traveller’s diarrhoea while away, accompanied by clear instructions about how to do this. If you are concerned about malaria risk at your destination, we have access to up to date resources to determine if medication is required to prevent malaria, and discuss which specific medication will suit you best.
What if I fall sick while away and need medical guidance?
If you are a member of GPs on Bayview’s loyalty program, you can access our member’s only video consultations in the event of becoming ill while you are away. Further details can be accessed here.
Need guidance on a travel health topic while away? The Centre for Disease Control website has an excellent list of Resources for Travellers, which can be accessed HERE.
What if I’m still not feeling well when I return home?
If you return from travel and are not well, we at GPs on Bayview are keen to catch up in person and determine the cause and seek out a solution for your ongoing problems.
