What is Mona Lisa Touch?
Mona Lisa Touch is a new non-surgical and non-hormonal treatment for vaginal atrophy that has been performed in Australia since 2013 mostly by gynaecologists, urogynaecologists and doctors who specialise in menopausal symptoms. It is a simple 5-minute treatment to restore the vaginal wall strength and blood supply.
What is Vaginal Atrophy?
Vaginal atrophy occurs when the walls of the vagina become thin and the elasticity and blood supply to the vaginal walls is affected. This results in a loss of hydration that can change pH and the environment in the vagina.
The main symptoms experienced are vaginal dryness, burning, itching, painful intercourse (dyspareunia) and pain on urination (dysuria). These symptoms can in turn lead to chronic UTIs and some urinary incontinence.
Who experiences these symptoms?
Mostly it is menopausal and post-menopausal women who will experience these symptoms. Additionally, women who have undergone treatment for breast cancer are effected by these
symptoms along with women who are post-natal and breastfeeding or who have undergone a difficult vaginal delivery resulting in an extensive perineal repair and scarring.
How do we treat these symptoms?
Traditionally these symptoms are treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), mainly in the form of a locally acting oestrogen cream that is inserted in to the vagina at night.
HRT cannot be used in women who have undergone treatment for Breast Cancer and additionally many women do not want to be reliant on HRT long-term.
How does Mona Lisa Touch work?
Mona Lisa Touch is a CO2 laser that is specifically developed for vaginal tissue. It results in microscopic injuries that can be equated to many tiny pin pricks which stimulates a healing response in the vagina and triggers new collagen and blood vessel formation. As a result, this treatment focuses on correcting the underlying cause of the vaginal atrophy and not just the symptoms. The treatment is painless and takes only 5 minutes. Patients are recommended to abstain from intercourse for 5 days afterwards.
Most people will experience benefits after just the first session. However, the recommended treatment is three sessions one month apart. Between 15000 to 20000 treatments have been performed worldwide and there are very few risks involved. At GPs on Bayview we also include a women’s health check as part of your initial consult
